Okay, one final addition to our Halloween decor….
Giant DIY spider web.
I wanted something simple, clean, and colorful–not the white mossy web stuff (it’s cool; just not for my house. I’m not into the spooky/spooky thing). You only need a bit of yarn and a few pieces of tape. Easy!
and then I loved the big web so much….I made a smaller version for our front door.
Here’s what you do.
Pick your color. I’ve really got a thing for fuschia and purple this season.
Then pick a spot for the web–indoors or outdoors. Ours goes from the window to the china cabinet, which allows the web to angle and pop out a bit. It adds good dimension, rather than laying flat against the wall.
Start by making the skeleton arms of the web.
I used double-strands of yarn and just taped the ends to the wall and cabinet with simple scotch tape. Make an X, then make other criss-cross lines, and finally make a big vertical strand from the ceiling down. I did this one last so it could lay on the other strings and pop out (since it wasn’t taped to a three dimensional object like the cabinet)
Next make the web rings.
Cut a very long strand of yarn for each section–longer than you think you’ll need. Fold it in half and start the ring with a simple loop knot (or whatever fancy name it has). Then take the yarn around to each arm and simply loop it around. You don’t need to tie knots–this is fast and easy. Don’t try to be accurate and precise. It’s better to look wonky here and there! When you get back around to beginning of the ring tie the end with a knot, cut off the excess, and start over on the next ring.
Continue the process to create as many rings as you like. For the very center ring, I skipped every other web arm so the lines would look more angular and less like a circle.
And there you go! Giant yarn spider web.
Of course you need a spider or two, lurking in the web.
The kids made these with my friend Katherine (I think it’s a Martha Stewart template) and covered them with glitter. Cute little craft.
and now they have a home.
To make a smaller version in a picture frame it’s just as easy….
I took a thrifted frame, removed the artwork and glass, spray painted it green (Krylon brand, gloss), then used speckled yarn to weave a little web. Done!
Looks great inside or on the front door.
