If all fabric looked like this, cutting it would be easy!
Or if it had grid lines on the back like a lot of gift wrap does now? Haah. That would be awesome. But no such luck, right??
Rotary cutters and mats are wonderful.
But what if you don’t have one (or don’t want to drag it out)? Or what if you have a piece of fabric to cut that’s larger than your mat?
That’s where a few tricks up your sleeve can be helpful.
And then you’ll be cutting and sewing some of my favorite “rectangle” shaped projects like a pro:
• pillows and pillowcases
• burp cloths
• drawstring bags
• zipper pouches
• tote bags
• simple skirts!
Annnnd….what if you have to cut and trim around a circular shape??? You know how tricky it can be to trim the entire hem of a circle skirt of First Day Dress!
Well, I’ll show you my absolute favorite trick for trimming a perfect line around circle shape.
(It’ll have you twirling with joy)

Did you make the dress you are wearing?!? It is beautiful!
Thank you! Sadly, no. It’s from Forever 21. But I’ve thought for years about making a pattern since many people have asked about it 🙂
Thank you Dana – loved your video. This is actually how I did my cutting long before I knew about cutting mats and rotary cutters :)! Never attempted the curved cutting method though and loved how you do this. Thank you!
I thoroughly enjoy your sewing videos. You explain everything so well.
I agree, you explain well and make everything seem so simple. PLUS, you have a great attitude and seem delightful
