A couple years ago the kids came home from pre-school with these cool little maracas….made from plastic easter eggs.
Genius.
So with left-over easter eggs on-hand and Cinco De Mayo coming up, the stars were aligned and we had to get shaking. Here’s what you need:
(Note: you can substitute popcorn for rice, beans, or lentils for different shaking sounds)
Here’s what you do:
Be as elaborate or as simple as you want with the tape.Β You could even use colored tape to hold the maracas together.Β But I prefer this:
DONE.
Dance!
Do it again.
and again, till you have a big bowl full of these shakers.
My Dad and I made the 50 maracas above for a New Years Eve party last year.Β I’m not sure who had more fun drawing and coloring….him, me, or Lucy.Β This project is fun for kids of all ages. For a real colorful celebration decorate with these:
Then enjoy the fiesta!
We’re having a party on Cinco De Mayo for my husband’s 40th – these are perfect for the girls to make and all the kids/grown-ups to play with.
Is the white white tape just regular masking tape?
you use the white tape to hold the moracias together and then you can take a marker and draw on them.
So cute! What a great idea π
Pinning this for future young’ns π Thanks for sharing!
Brilliant idea!! I may take this one into my daughter’s preschool class!!
What a fun idea! Lyndon has been filling his Easter eggs with rice since Easter (and yes, accidentally dropping them on the floor to create a wonderful rice mess). He will love this new idea (and I’ll love that the eggs are now TAPED together!). btw, happy to see you have the internet again. phew.
That is genius! my little Paige would love those!
So fun! And love the Owen dancing photos….so cute!
Love it! We just made drums and paper plate tambourines for my church’s nursery with the kids. These would make great instruments to add to our collection.
How fun! My kids would love that. My sweet girl is turning two on Thursday, just might have to do this for her birthday.
Seriously genius! Thanks for sharing. I saw cute Lucy and your heart doily shirt in my Family Fun magazine. Such cute kiddos!
These look so much fun. I have pinned it, can’t wait for my daughter to grow up and do this with me.
This is beyond clever! I can’t wait to try it.
haha, love the last picture π Very cute!
Looks like a lot of fun!
What a fun idea! I love O’s shorts too. π
Such a brilliant idea!! I was just stopping by after I saw you in a Family Fun magazine! Congrats! π
Wow – isn’t it amazing how BIG your kids get when you have a baby?!!! Owen is super big boy, now!!!! Wow.
Fun idea! We might just have to do this. I think it is really fun that you celebrate Cinco de Mayo. I guess I should be better about it since I’m from AZ.
As always you photographed this beautifully!
What a great idea! Although I admit…I always horde my plastic Easter eggs. We make a big to-do of “sending them back to the bunny” each year. Still, I bet I could spare a few.
Thanks for this! I was looking for something fun to do with my preschoolers. This is a great idea!
What a fun idea! As a music teacher, I have made egg shakers before but I never would have thought to add spoons to make them into maracas! Love it and thank you for sharing π
What a cute idea! My kids love anything that makes noise – er, music! We will have to try this out!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS! I had to blog about it, haha http://www.thebetternester.com/2012/04/maracas.html
I love it! I wonder… what if you stretched a balloon over it instead of taping it… would it even work? I just might have to try that!
Brilliant! I must have some plastics eggs hanging around somewhere…
What a great idea for easy craft at home. I just love your blog, I look forward to reading it every day while I savor my morning coffee. Thanks!
Love this idea. So easy & fun for kids.

Such an awesome idea!! I love it
So clever, the kid I nanny for had some plastic easter eggs laying around she’s bored of I’ll have to see if I can track them down for reuse.
I love this idea. I have egg shakers for my music classes, but now I’ll add spoons to some of them…the kids will love it. Thanks.
very cute! I pinned it to my Oogieloves Party board: http://pinterest.com/pattiecordova/an-oogieloves-party/
I love the ideas that are on the this website.
Wow, what a great idea, to use the spoons to make a handle! Also never would have thought of covering the entire egg with tape, and then decorating it, but I really like the way those ones look π
What a great idea! I’m always at a loss about what to do with leftover easter eggs. I featured you today on Creative Green Living.
what kind of tape is it?
What an AWESOME idea!! I wish I would have stumbled upon this before Cinco De Mayo so that my first graders could have made these. Definitely saving for next year!!
I love it!!! Thank-you!!!
i love is ideia!!
Howdy are using WordPress for your site platform?
I’m new to the blog world but I’m trying to get started
and create my own. Do you need any coding knowledge to make your own blog?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I love this and plan on making them with my daughter’s K class. Given our limited time, I’ll probably make them at home and let them decorate them. But will someone please answer the question of what kind of tape is best? I’ve tried white duct tape, but it’s very wide so there are a lit of folds on the egg, making it difficult to draw on it. I tried white hockey tape, but it is, by nature, a little too tacky on the handle. And neither tape is good for drawing / coloring with crayons. The kids have crayons, but not markers. Thanks!!! :).
It’s just white or off-white masking tape. You can buy it at any craft store, at the grocery store, at walmart, etc.
I read this post fully concerning the difference of newest and earlier technologies, it’s
remarkable article.
