A couple years ago the kids came home from pre-school with these cool little maracas….made from plastic easter eggs.
Genius.
So with left-over easter eggs on-hand and Cinco De Mayo coming up, the stars were aligned and we had to get shaking.
Here’s what you need:
(Note: you can substitute popcorn for rice, beans, or lentils for different shaking sounds)
Here’s what you do:
Be as elaborate or as simple as you want with the tape. You could even use colored tape to hold the maracas together. But I prefer this:
DONE.
Dance!
Do it again.
and again, till you have a big bowl full of these shakers.
My Dad and I made the 50 maracas above for a New Years Eve party last year. I’m not sure who had more fun drawing and coloring….him, me, or Lucy. This project is fun for kids of all ages.

We’re having a party on Cinco De Mayo for my husband’s 40th – these are perfect for the girls to make and all the kids/grown-ups to play with.
Is the white white tape just regular masking tape?
you use the white tape to hold the moracias together and then you can take a marker and draw on them.

Love it! We just made drums and paper plate tambourines for my church’s nursery with the kids. These would make great instruments to add to our collection.

What a great idea! Although I admit…I always horde my plastic Easter eggs. We make a big to-do of “sending them back to the bunny” each year. Still, I bet I could spare a few.

I love this and plan on making them with my daughter’s K class. Given our limited time, I’ll probably make them at home and let them decorate them. But will someone please answer the question of what kind of tape is best? I’ve tried white duct tape, but it’s very wide so there are a lit of folds on the egg, making it difficult to draw on it. I tried white hockey tape, but it is, by nature, a little too tacky on the handle. And neither tape is good for drawing / coloring with crayons. The kids have crayons, but not markers. Thanks!!! :).
It’s just white or off-white masking tape. You can buy it at any craft store, at the grocery store, at walmart, etc.
