Sewing with Spoonflower and my books for free!

You know how we’re always complaining about how hard it is to find cute knit fabrics? I just discovered something amazing last month: Spoonflower sells knits!  Beautiful, soft, organic, interlock knits! In any print imaginable!
I quickly placed 30 prints in my “favorites”….

Now I won’t lie, they’re pricey.  But they really are gorgeous (some of the softest knits I’ve ever felt).  And the options are absolutely endless!  If you’ve never been to Spoonflower, here’s the quick rundown.   It’s a site where you can create your own fabric design OR simply browse the bazillion cool prints that others have designed, and then purchase as little as one yard of fabric….or even just a fat quarter.  Isn’t that cool? I’m sort of hooked on this designer.

So, to enjoy such knit yumminess, I’ve teamed up with Spoonflower for a 2-post project.  Today I’m sharing all about knits on the Spoonflower blog.

(Otter Pop Dots SwimsuitThe 90 Minute Shirt Tutorial)

I pulled info from the Knits section of my new book Fabrics A to Z, to talk about what knits are, the most common types you’ll come across, and some Do’s and Don’ts for sewing with knits.

So head over to check it out!

And while you’re there….enter the giveaway to win one of my books!

(Goodnight Moon Jammies)

We’re giving away 3 copies of Fabrics A to Z, which outlines over 150 different types of fabric, their uses, properties, what to do with them, how to wash them, etc. etc.

Next week the Spoonflower fun continues when I share a new tutorial based on their lovely knit fabrics.
But until then….best of luck winning a book!

  1. I am in love with the same designer! I love Spoonflower. As a fun holiday gift for the grandparents, my daughter designed 2 fabrics and then we made a few things from that. I will be blogging about that next week.

  2. 2) Melissa M

I would love to win your book…I have a pile of knits just waiting to be used but I’m a little intimidated!

  3. 3) Evia

Would LOVE to win a copy! And would love to sew some fun knits for my little ones. =)

  4. I love the idea of spoonflower. Everytime I see the hp challenge on project runway, I have to smirk– because with spoonflower we can *al*l design our own fabric!

  5. it would be so awesome to win a copy of your book. your projects always inspire me!

  6. Ooo! I’m headed to check out Spoonflower NOW! I would love to win a copy of your book. But if I don’t win one, I’ll buy one. I’m a newbie to sewing so I’m eager to learn.

  7. Awwww I must be really duh or something. I don’t seem to be able to leave a comment on Spoonflower or perhaps I have to be a member? No matter, I’m still a Dana-MADE fan lol. The book seems to be lovely so I might just have to check it out myself, I love knits and I must sew with them (one day!) 😉

  8. 8) Ali

I’d love a copy of your book.
One comment on the dyes used for Spoonflower fabrics. Dark colors don’t wash well. Some of the color rubs off where the fabric was rubbed and bent in the wash, so wash gently and choose lighter colors and/or fabrics with more pattern to them. If in doubt buy a swatch or fat quarter and wash it before buying yardage.

i had the same experience. dark coulour and full colour backgrounds are not so good on the knit – fabric they wash out very fast.- i love them anyway though. but the idea and concept is great and the other fabrics are fantastic too.
check out the dutch designer :BORA

      • Thanks for the heads up about this!

  9. I covet this book!!! I was holding out for Christmas to get this for myself, but would love a copy. Huge MADE fan!!

  10. 12) andrea

Oooh I love them! So many beautiful designs

  11. 13) AmyLou

I’d love a copy of your book! I also love Spoonflower prints, but with 4 kids and one with major orthopedic issues, we just can’t afford it. I’m a huge MADE fan, though, and I’ve been reading your for the last 3 years.

  12. 14) Nikki

I love that designer too! Last week I purchased some wall decals in one of her prints! Spoonflower and Made, awesome pairing!

  13. 15) Jill M

I’ve ordered a few times from spoonflower, two different fabrics. I have to admit I’ve been super dissappointed with the quality of the ink, it seems to fade just so fast 🙁

Now on to your book. Currently it’s sitting in my Aamzon wishlist. I am really hoping that I get a copy of it this holiday, I could get lost in a book like that (in the good kind of lost way 😉 )

  14. This is your great Post !

  15. 17) Dana S

I would love to win your book! This is a great post!

  16. Since I already own your book, I don’t need to enter this giveaway. I LOVE your book, it’s fabulous. I love how it simply and clearly lists all the information I need and has great photos to go with it. I’m a spoonflower addict as well. It’s an expensive habit.

  17. 19) Megan

    Great prints!

  18. I hope I win, I’ve never tried to sew with knits!

  19. 21) Tammy W

  22. One chance more to win you’re book : I take it !!!!

Thanks for sharing this wonderfull website of knits !

  23. 25) Vivi

Thanks to you I almost only sew with knits…..and I´ve only just started.

  24. 26) Susan Rogers

What a great resourceful book. I’d love to win your book. Thanks!!

  25. Is there anything better than fabric? Maybe creating something new with it!

  26. 29) carolina

I love spoonflower but is really expensive and my husband really but really “ask the papers” if i bought something there. How you do to use your fabrics, I bought but i afraid to damage or do something wong, so buy cheap tshirts and do things with that, and the pretty fabric are in the drawer waiting something.

  27. 30) Analese

I would love to win!! Those knits are fabulous and as a new mom I find myself always on the hunt for modern cute prints.

  28. Holli has been in my favorites for months, too! I love Spoonflower- I’m hoping to design my own fabric over there sometime soon!!

  29. Oooh, I see you like stars too! 🙂 I’ve yet to order from Spoonflower (mostly because of the prices), but you’re right, good knits are hard to find! Are you going to try your hand at designing something, Dana?

  30. 33) Marie

*love* MADE! So very glad to discover Spoonflower — my name here is graninason. Thanks!

  31. 34) Sally

Thank you for the heads up about Spoonflower knits! As far as your book ……. I bought it and it is my bible in the sewing room! And the laundry room! It is the best sewing investment I have made. Seriously!

  32. 35) emily

how fun! I love spoonflower. I’ve designed some of my own fabric and its SO fun when someone else buys it :o)

  33. 36) Vianely

Oh, Lord! May I have one copy of your book? I’d just love that! I got a lot of pretty fabric and I want to do a good sewing for my little girl.

  34. I really love the prints you featured, and I love the idea of spoonflower, but I have to agree that the fading is an issue. Have you washed your knits yet? How did it turn out? I know their interlock is divine, but I’m hesitant to spend the money after my horrible experience with the kona and sateen. The dresses I made with it are unwearable – the fading was awful. And awfully disappointing too.

  35. Oh, goodness…I need to make some leggings to go with Katie’s skirts…those fabrics are so cute!

  36. 39) Rosemary

My niece is expecting a little boy in March and I would love to make that darling T-shirt for him. She also has a 3-year old girl and a five-year old boy that I would love to spoil with some new things as well. I hope those cute patterns are in the book. Those knits fabrics are very cute, can’t wait to sew with them! Thanks for the opportunity to win a great book!

  37. 40) Ronda Halvorsen-Ferns

I love spoonflower but have always been a gawker, had no idea they had knits!!!

  38. 41) Anita

I’m in awe of your awesomness!

  39. 42) Kelly G Lambert

Thank you for your ideas, and introducing me to Spoonflower~!
