Want to feel like a sewing wizard? That’s how I feel about learning new skills. And today we’re going to make you a wizard of fancy fabrics. SEQUINS. LACE. SATIN. Bring it all.
Have you oooh’ed and aaah’ed over fabrics like this at the store, but you didn’t know what you’d do with them? It can feel intimidating. I mean, it’s not like you would make a pillowcase out of sequined fabric.
OK, you could. But there are far more comfortable fabrics to sleep on. Haah.
Answer: Make a skirt!
YES. And then you’ll be ready for your next party. Or you know, your next trip to the grocery store.
Because why not be fancy every day??
The extra awesome part about this skirt…is that it’s LINED, so it’s the perfect project for those textured, lacy, eyelet, or sheer fabrics. Now you know what to do with them! And, you can get extra wizardly and add a sash/tie around the waist (like the pink skirt above). Just follow this tutorial here.
Okay let’s sew. Hit the play button below and enjoy!

Love. Did you make your shirt? I need a tutorial for it too!
Haha. I did not…it’s from Target, but I DO have a very similar pattern. It’s the shirt version of the First Day Dress.
Check out the photos and you’ll see that look:

Hi Dana. Have you ever used a walking foot when sewing with these slippery/shift-prone fabrics? Does it help control slippage? Worth trying?? Thanks!
I haven’t tried that, but sure…give it a shot!
Hi Dana, I absolutely love this new skirt!! I actually tried the anywhere skirt, and I love it!! I love all of your posts and videos! I saw another new video too I think it is called the drawstring bag? Well have a great day!
Thanks so much Riley! That makes me so happy to hear!
And yes….try out the drawstring backpack too. They’re really fun and fast!
You inspired me to sew again! I made skirts and PJ pants for my 4 grand children. Love your videos!
Couple of question: You said that you cut it 12 inches long for the length you wanted. Do you add any extra to this to account for the fabric taken up in the seam allowance where you add the lining at the hemline?
When stitching the long seam to form the tube, when you come to that skirt/lining seam, are you allowances open, or pushed to one side? It seems like ti would be easier to fold along that line if the seam allowances were open.
What size needle and type of needle did you use? I’ve used the mermaid sequin fabric to make a pillow and a couple of bags, and I use a 90 Universal or top stitch needle. Just curious what works best for you?
Thanks for the cute skirt ideas. This would be a great technique for doing a reversible skirt too out of cotton fabrics.
Yes, the seam allowance for the waistband casing is included in those measurements…but do what works for you! I just use a general size needle, probably a 70-80.
YOU ARE JUST AMAZING I AM 67 YEARS OLD AND YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON THAT HAS EVER INSPIRED ME TO SEW. YOUR TUITION IS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. I NOW SEW DRESSES FOR MY GRANDCHILD AND I CAN’T BELIEVE I HAVE MADE THEM WHEN I SEE THEM WEARING THE OUTFITS, THANKS AGAIN.
That’s awesome to hear! Thanks for sharing Hillary! 🙂
Great tutorial. When you add a bow to the waistband do you add it after the waistband is sewn? Is it stitched into the side seams or attached on top of the finished waistband and slip stitched on top? Thanks.
The bow/sash is attached a little differently than in the video, but I have a full tutorial for that here:

Does it work for other fabrics
Yep!
Thank you so much
Thank you for the great tutorial, loved your video! 🙂
Hi, I am so glad to have found your youtube channel. I am wondering how to sew a zipper into a pencil skirt that is lined… and the fabric is vinyl and sequenced too. I am very aware that I can’t use pins and I don’t like to have the zip showing.
Any advice would be great!
Thank you.
Ronnie
Love this! Do you machine wash this or by hand? I would live to make this for my niece, but am pretty sure her parents wouldn’t take the time to hand wash.
Thank you!
Hi Rebecca – I would recommend following the fabric manufacturer’s instructions, but most of the sequined fabric I’ve seen requires hand washing, unfortunately!
Once again an awesome tutorial. Fun andEasy to follow. Made 3 of the skirts today for my 7 year old and her girlfriends to wear to their first concert this weekend, they are absolutely in love!
With regards to washing the skirt, try putting it in a lingerie bag and wash on the gentle cycle in the machine.
Hello Dana. Your videos are awesome. Unfortunately when it comes to sewing and patterns I’m dumber than a bag of rocks. Is it possible that I can email you the measurements I need and you help me figure out how to cut them? Please and thank you.
