KCWC – Yellow Vest

I never understood why people wore vests until I bought a jacket a few years ago that had a fleece vest lining and it was amazingly warm! Ah-ha! I get it now. And since we live in one of those “milder winter” climates (though it did snow for a day last year), I thought a vest would be perfect for Lucy. Throw it over a long-sleeved shirt and we’re off to school.
I don’t usually sketch things. In fact, I’m horrible at it; my sister got all the talent in the drawing department. But I had a simple image in my mind so this time I jotted it down. I’d say it came out pretty close, though it may have been fun to do a small ruffle over the shoulders? A faux sleeve-ish kind of thing? Then I guess it would be a shirt and not a vest. Hmmm.
I made my own bias tape to finish off all the exposed seams and it was dreamy! So easy to do and no facings needed for the flaps of the jacket or collar.
However, the buttons are a bit off-centered, which was a result of the narrow bias-tape look. The vest actually overlaps enough in the front to center the buttons, but then the buttons would end up being on the yellow fleece, instead of on the bias tape. It looked weird so I kept them centered with the bias tape and thus, off-centered with the sides of the vest. Oh well. Small design flaw. Better luck next time.

It’s my first contribution to Elsie Marley’s Kid’s Clothing Week Challenge. And yep, it’s yellow! Have you been making kid’s clothes this week? Homemade by Jill‘s been churning them out every day! And Noodlehead just made this lovely red voile shirt. I love to see what everyone’s up to.

Hi Dana. I love your site. But guess what? I don’t know how to sew. I mean I guess I know how to stitch a straight line, but that’s where it ends. I have two young daughters, and a shaky employment situation, so I’m trying to pick up some survival skills, just in-case!

I’m curious if you could tell me how you got the top part of that vest onto the bottom part of the vest. I read the post on how to make the bias tape (not sure how that will go, but I’m game to give it a shot.) I think I’ll be able to cut it out, and stitch the two pieces together, and maybe hem the bottom… but I was hoping you could help me understand how you attached the top part to the bottom, with what looks like a mini ruffle.

It’s a great vest. We live in Michigan, so I know it will be a hit. Thank you so much.

  2. Hi Dana- I have admired this cute vest for some time and finally made one of my own for my daughter based on your pics. I hope you don’t mind that I called it a MADE knock-off. šŸ™‚ I just posted the write-up here if you want to check it out: http://allthisforthem.blogspot.com/2013/01/winter-fleece-vest.html
Thanks for all the continuous inspiration on your blog. I love it! šŸ™‚

  3. Boohoo…no pattern? I LOVE this little vest – cut perfectly at the armholes. Making one for my granddaughter, if I can fudge the pattern.
