I never understood why people wore vests until I bought a jacket a few years ago that had a fleece vest lining and it was amazingly warm! Ah-ha! I get it now. And since we live in one of those “milder winter” climates (though it did snow for a day last year), I thought a vest would be perfect for Lucy. Throw it over a long-sleeved shirt and we’re off to school.
I don’t usually sketch things. In fact, I’m horrible at it; my sister got all the talent in the drawing department. But I had a simple image in my mind so this time I jotted it down. I’d say it came out pretty close, though it may have been fun to do a small ruffle over the shoulders? A faux sleeve-ish kind of thing? Then I guess it would be a shirt and not a vest. Hmmm.
I made my own bias tape to finish off all the exposed seams and it was dreamy! So easy to do and no facings needed for the flaps of the jacket or collar.
However, the buttons are a bit off-centered, which was a result of the narrow bias-tape look. The vest actually overlaps enough in the front to center the buttons, but then the buttons would end up being on the yellow fleece, instead of on the bias tape. It looked weird so I kept them centered with the bias tape and thus, off-centered with the sides of the vest. Oh well. Small design flaw. Better luck next time.
