red carpet artists

Did you watch the Oscars last night?
I thought it was short, sweet, nice to have Billy Crystal back, Cirque du Soleil was amazing, and I loved the interviews clips with actors. Overall a good show.(all photos via imdb and Getty images)

And of course lots of pretty looks.
I think everyone agreed that Octavia Spencer was stunning. Her gown was gorgeous, fit her so well, and she won! What a sweet moment.
My other favorite look was Emma Stone with her floppy bow collar. She’s such a gorgeous lady and her bit with Ben Stiller was pretty funny.

All these flowy dresses caught my eye too…along with Esperanza Spalding’s hair. How great is that ‘do? And how beautiful was her tribute song?
Top: Kristin Wiig, Esperanza Spalding, Penelope Cruz
Bottom: Milla Jovovich, Cameron Diaz, Berenice Bejo

There were definitely some looks I didn’t care for….like Maya Rudolph (and she looked so great on SNL the week before), Viola Davis (just wasn’t digging the top of the dress or the red hair on her), and Melissa McCarthy (she’s a curvy lady but there are definitely better looks for her).

But let’s focus on the bright spots here.
I totally loved Meryl Steep’s acceptance speech (my postpartum emotions got the best of me).

And I’m so happy The Artist took home many awards.
Have you seen the film?
It’s darling! It’s charming. I thought I would get sick of the “silence”….but after 10 minutes you forget that the actors aren’t talking because everyone is so charismatic and the music is wonderful. And seriously, how cute are these two? I absolutely fell in love with Argentine actress Berenice Bejo and her cute expressions. I hope we see more of her in the future.
If you haven’t seen The Artist, it’s going to be released on more screens this week. Get out on a date night and see it! Casey liked it too.
And he came home and downloaded a bunch of 1920s music.
It’s catchy.

And that’s a red carpet recap.
Check out tons of gorgeous photos HERE on imbd.
Did I miss any of your favorite looks?

  1. 1) Carolyn

Thanks for the update on the awards….I didn’t get a chance to watch it. And all the lovely pics of the gowns that you shared – very inspirational. My daughter is going to her senior prom late April and this year’s theme is Hollywood and the Red Carpet. Prom dress shopping to take place this coming weekend so this gives us some great ideas for red carpet style dresses (and also what NOT to wear). Have a great day!

  2. I wasn’t surprised that so many had negative review’s of Emma Stone’s dress, but I thought it was lovely. Certainly the big collar bow isn’t for everyone and it’s definitely a statement, but the drapey-floppiness of it made it work.

Gwynneth Paltrow looked great even with the weird shoulders. It worked ok.

Angelina Jolie’s leg slit dress didn’t do it for me. It wasn’t bad, but she didn’t wear it well.

I agree with you abt. Melissa McCarthy. She could have done better.

My top 3 faves were: Natalie Portman in her polka dot dress, Jessica Chastain in gold & black, and I really liked Sandra Bullock in the black/white and sparkles.

  3. You missed Michelle Williams! I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look bad.

  4. 4) Joanna W

I know this sounds horrible, but as I clicked through the imdb photos you linked to, I was comforted by the fact that you could see cakey makeup and laugh lines on so many actresses in those high quality photos. They ARE real people!

I thought Jessica Chastain and Michelle Williams looked awesome.

Melanie Griffith looks like she has been hit in the face with a cast iron skillet. Yikes!

  5. 5) catie

my favorite was emma stone! i LOVE that color on her!

  6. 6) darci

some people didnt care for emma stones big bow, but i thought she looked great, one ofmy favs. and i reallylike gwyneth, too
angelina was too shiny sweaty looking when she went up to present.

  7. OOOh what a nice recap! I loved Emma Stone. She looked so pretty and just seems like someone you would want to be friends with. My favorite moment of the night was Octavia Spencer’s win and she looked just lovely.
I didn’t care for Mellisa McCarthy’s dress either. She has worn much better choices this year.
I thought that Angelina’s dress was boring and thought that it was hilarious that the guys that excepted the award she gave out were totally making fun of her and posing like she did. Does that make me mean? šŸ™‚ I think she’ll be o.k.

  8. 8) alexandra

I have to say that I love Octavia Spencer (however, I might be biased as she is from my home state and she and I have the same alma mater…War Eagle!) I loved her dress and agree that she looked stunning. I love Emma Stone’s bow and all I could think when I saw it was that I wish I could pull it off.

  9. Thanks for the recap. I made it to Best Supporting Actor and then had to call it quits and go to bed. Sometimes being a mom of tiny ones means you are entirely pathetic.

  10. I love Gwyneth Paltrow’s look too. Very tasteful and modest. I have really been loving tan and nude tones, so when I saw a lot of dresses in those colors it made me happy. šŸ™‚

After last night I promised to go see the Artist. I haven’t seen Hugo either, but I added it to my list. It looks like a vibrant, beautiful film.

    And yes….loved Meryl’s acceptance speech too. šŸ™‚

  11. I went to see The Artist with a friend this weekend and enjoy it! We especially loved the music in the movie. The added bonus for us was that we got to see it in an older theater which added to the charm.

  12. 12) Jenn

Rooney Mara knocked my socks off. I know she got a lot of criticism about the bodice of the dress, but I found the entire look charming on her. She really evoked a vintage vibe without going into the “costume” range. I think she looked beautiful.

  13. 13) Sarah K.

Missed it all – thanks for the fashion recap!

  14. 14) Jean

I thought it was a great show!!! I agree with your fave looks. Emma Stone was beautiful and SO funny as always! She was one of the highlights for me!

  15. Emma Stone could charm me into liking anything she wears! Great Oscar recap – and I agree with you fashion assessments! I was particularly bummed by Melissa McCarthy’s choice. That did not do her “girls” any favors.

  16. I totally cried at Meryl Streep’s speech too and I don’t have postpartum to blame it on. So good! The way she thanked old friends and new…Love!
