Sewing for Boys

You’ve heard me preaching the same tune for a while….why aren’t there more DIY Boy clothing ideas out there? Many of you are helping to change to that. And many of you participated with us during three sessions of Celebrate the BOY. Thanks!

But the ratio of girl-to-boy ideas will never be balanced.
I’m as guilty as the next person.
And I’ve concluded that the unbalanced ratio is because boy’s clothing is (typically) more complicated to make than girl’s. Aside from basic pants or shorts, you can’t make a simple skirt and call it a day…..or throw elastic thread in the machine and whip up a summer dress in 30 minutes. Boy’s and Men’s clothing are more detail oriented–if you want to make it look professional or kinda cool.
This can be intimidating as a sewer.
Unless….you have a good pattern, tutorial, or book to go to.

Can you guess where this is going?

YES! Shelly Figueroa and Karen LePage of Patterns by Figgys have compiled a fabulous apparel book with 24 patterns/projects for BOYs.
It’s called Sewing for Boys.
Made by Rae previewed the book during Celebrate the BOY this year. And now the book is out!

The front is filled with pattern pages. And then the book has an interesting layout….
The first section is page after page of beautiful project photos; it reads sort of like a fashion magazine. Just thumb through it and smile at the projects you want to make.
After the cute photos, the book goes into the nitty-gritty with illustrations and instructions for each project.
It’s a different take on other sewing books I’ve seen. Kind of fun.

Each project is labeled with the difficulty level–Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced.
But I should be upfront here.

There are definitely some cool beginner projects but I’m not sure this book is for the casual sewer. Many of the cool designs are intermediate level–which falls right in line with my thoughts above–trying to make boys clothing look cool sometimes requires detailed skills. The book is really a compilation of many involved patterns in one place (which makes it a great buy, considering the amount of info in there). But it requires some gumption on your part to really dive into the detailed instructions. If you’re up for the challenge, you’ll love what this book offers!

And if you want to try it out, you’re in luck.
Today we’re giving away THREE copies of the book!

  1. I LOVE this post! I wish I had seen it when it was first posted…it was the day before my son turned one! I guess I have some catching up to do, so I can make a wardrobe for him!

  2. Cool book, and well designed. I must get it. Thanks!

  3. 3) A Magical Life

This looks adorable. I was super excited to see the title on a link at a different blog because I thought it was sewing projects for boys to do. Both of my boys love to sew and I would love a round up of simple sewing projects to hone their skills. Do you know of any such link?
