Ice Cream Shop Fabric

Boardwalk Delight fabric collection - Ice Cream Shop print - designed by Dana Willard for Art Gallery Fabrics

Good morning my friends! I hope you had a great weekend.

Two items to discuss on today:

1. The winner of the Scandinavian Gatherings book giveaway is:

#74 – Heather, who said “We have a crew of Scandinavian fans in this house. This book looks like it would be fun for us all.”

Congrats! And thank you all for entering. It was interesting to see how many of you have Scandinavian background, or share a love for their design. I can’t wait to show you my next fabric collection (which doesn’t come out till August)…because it has a very minimalist, modern-retro Scandinavian vibe. Ahhhh! But before I get ahead of myself, discussion point #2…..

2. Fabric.

Haah. I guess we were already talking about that.

But let’s talk Boardwalk Delight. I have so many photos from the Look Book that I have never shared. So today let’s chat about the Ice Cream Shop print.

This was actually the first design I made for the collection, which seems a bit weird. You’d think I’d start with ice cream cones, or popsicles, or something that feels like a “main print.” But I guess that’s what I love about this print—it IS sort of like a main print, or it can be the supporting cast.

Basically, I love simple designs and I love color. So that’s how this print came to be. I was inspired by the many mosaic walls I’ve seen down by the beach where I grew up.

And while I wanted to call it “cute tile wall where you want to take an Instagram photo”….I thought “Ice Cream Shop” would flow a little better.

I love the different ways it’s being featured in apparel. Aaah how cute is this dress with the back circle cutout?? Alexis made it for the look book. The coral ribbon she chose is a perfect complement!

Ice Cream Shop is one of three prints in the collection that comes in a knit. If you haven’t gotten a chance to sew with Art Gallery’s cotton/spandex jersey knit, you’re in for a TREAT. It’s amazingly soft and a perfect t-shirt weight! That’s what Caroline’s swingy tunic is made from.

So it’s great as a the main fabric, or it’s perfect as a complimentary/blender fabric.  Anna used the quilting cotton as a lining trim on her amazing bag here:

The quilting cotton is great for so many things besides quilting! One of the things I get asked often is whether it can be used for apparel, and the answer is definitely YES. Art Gallery quilting cotton is really fine, soft, premium quality stuff.  I think you’ll be thrilled with how well it works for clothes.   Like this crazy cool shirt on my brother Mark….
Ahhh! I love this!

The pattern is the Negroni Shirt from Colette Patterns, and Teri Dodds sewed it up masterfully for the look book.  I’m claiming it as “the new Hawaiian shirt.”

I mean, how about that back??  I love how the shirt plays with every direction of the print… horizontal, vertical, bias. And then bias the other way!

And speaking of stripe play….think this is too much?

I couldn’t resist.
