Kids, dolls, and softie toys everywhere will be happy.

These baskets are soft and plush with a bit of batting inside.  And they’re great for boys and girls.  My son is always looking for a cozy spot to put Woody the cowboy to bed….or for a make-shift Death Star for an Angry Birds battle.

If you’ve got a toy that needs a special spot, we’ve got the pattern.

Here are the details….

PATTERN and PRINTING:
 • This is a 36-page PDF document, which means you download it after payment to your computer. The pattern is not physically mailed to you.  After purchase you are sent a link for downloading the pattern to your computer (this is sent to the email address attached with your paypal account).  Please note that the link will expire after a few days!  So when you open the download pattern link, make sure you save the pdf file to your computer so you always have it for future use.
• The file size is 2.8 MB
• You do not need to print every page, only the 12 pattern pages.
• Also included is a printable 3-page cheat sheet for sewing reference.
• Pages print to standard 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper (for printing outside of the US see below)
• Pages are pieced together by trimming along the border, matching them at the markings, and taping together.  I’ve tried to make this as simple as possible with detailed instructions in the pattern itself.

SIZING:
The Baby Doll Basket Pattern comes in 3 sizes:
SMALL: fits dolls and toys 12-14 inches
MEDIUM: fits dolls and toys 14-16 inches (such as “Bitty Baby”)
LARGE: fits dolls and toys 16-18 inches (such as “American Girl” or “Our Generation” dolls)

The pattern combines colorful photos and illustrations with very detailed instructions for sewing a Baby Basket, with a basket mattress, pillow, and simple doll blanket.
We won’t leave out any bits of info!  If you like our tutorials, you’ll love this pattern.

SKILL LEVEL:
The pattern is aimed the Advanced Beginner and beyond.

Of course I encourage anyone to push themselves and take on a challenge.   So if you’re a true beginner, don’t be scared off.  Just bear in mind that you will be sewing with bulkier fabrics, pinning and sewing some interfaced corners, and working with bias tape.  Get a sewing friend to coach you along the way and you can do it.

FABRIC and SUPPLIES:

a2
Printing in another Country (outside of the US)
The pattern was created for standard US printers but should work for other countries as well. There are measuring rulers on the side of each page (in inches) so you can see if you’ve printed to the proper print size. The pattern images do NOT print to edge of the paper…so I recommend printing to your standard size paper, checking the ruler, and matching the pattern pieces up as outlined in the instructions.

And….that’s it!

I’ve been checking every single day. Yay!! it’s here. Just downloaded the pattern. I am so excited. Thank you.

  7. 9) Tegan

Just wondering what difficulty rating you would give this project? I am a beginner and wondering if its out of my depth. Thanks

    • 10) Celeste

I sewed one last night. I think Dana is right when she calls it a project for an experienced beginner. There are a couple of spots that can get a bit tricky, but the instructions show a lot of pictures and charts that will guide you through it. I’d say, give it a try.

      • 11) Tegan

Thanks Celeste, I think I will give it a try.

        • 12) Dana

          Thanks for the feedback Celeste!
And thanks for asking about that Tegan. I’ve added additional “skill level” info to the listing above….

  21. I love that white one! I may have to duplicate it in a white PUL (for easy clean care). And i forgot woody needs a place to lay.

  22. Oh!!!!! I have some cowboy PUL i’ve been hoarding! And some buzz fabric that matches! Yay!!!!! Starting on a large asap!

  23. 30) Beatrice

Love it! Looking at your photos reminded me of the baby doll basket my mom made me when I was little. I had totally forgotten…wish we had hung on to it.

  25. Dana – this is crazy amazing!! I am so in love with it!!!

  28. 36) Rita (Lisbon, Portugal)

Thanks so much! And… where can I buy the Darth Vader pillow pattern? Wow! Do you sell that too? 🙂
    Thanks from Portugal

    • 37) Dana

haha. No. Sorry 🙁 I bought those at a store called Target. It’s a Darth Vader Angry Bird toy. I’m sure you can find it online!

  29. 38) Jana

Wow! So cute…..Thank you Dana for wonderful pattern!

  30. 39) lux

yes!!!! thank you – been checking nonstop for this to come!

  31. 40) Jody

This is so cute I must make one or several!
What is your policy if we wanted to use your pattern to make some of these to sell?

    Thanks

    • 41) Dana

Yes! You are able to make and sell these if you’d like. Here’s what the pattern says:

      • What IS permitted….is to make doll baskets from this pattern and sell in your small-scale shop, such as an etsy shop, or for a local fundraising event. No production license is needed. However, please mention somewhere in your product listing that you used the “Baby Doll Basket Pattern by MADE” (www.danamadeit.com)
      And NO mass-production please.

      • Yay! I really appreciate pattern makers who are willing to allow limited use with attribution to the pattern maker. You really help promote making and selling local for those of us who sell on small scale. I will be getting your pattern and promoting YOU. I make soft dolls and toys with a local child care center and to offer at farmers market. The carry basket will be an awesome carrier for soft baby dolls and other stuffed animals. Thanks for a great idea and the willingness to share your work and design creativity.

  32. 44) Melanie P

I just purchased it– can’t wait to get started!

  33. Just finished making my first and have two more to go! Ok, so I totally screwed up the first time around when cutting the center pieces. Where it said “folded”, I actually folded it! Not sure what I was thinking. Needless to say I had to re-cut the center pieces and start that section over. Other than that it was fairly simple and your instructions were so incredibly easy to follow! Thank you!

  34. 46) Stephanie

I have made two medium sized ones now and I LOVE them. This pattern is so amazing. I think my husband got sick of hearing me say, “this pattern is so well written” as I was sewing. Thanks Dana for another GREAT pattern.

    • 47) Dana

That makes me so happy to hear!
Thanks for the great feedback Stephanie 🙂
      – Dana

  35. 48) Kendra

Just bought the pattern to make presents. On your medium example, I notices you used already quilted fabric for the basket. Did you just skip the batting on the basket and still line it with fabric and interfacing?

    • 49) Dana

      Hi Kendra,
I still used batting and interfacing with the quilted fabric. And it worked great.
      Have fun sewing!
      – Dana

  36. 50) Natalia

    Dana,

Thank you so much, this is going to be the most perfect Christmas present for my daughter!

I do have a question – could I get away with using fusible fleece instead of batting and interfacing?

    Thank you!

    • 51) Dana

You could try that, although I’m not sure fusible fleece is puffy enough. You want batting that gives a bit of puff to the basket layers.

  37. 52) Megan Hutchison

How long is this taking the advanced beginner time wise?

    • 53) Dana

Prob a few hours—A couple hours of prep and an hour, or hour and a half of sewing.
It’s a great project to work on in two sets:
Cut everything one day or after kids go to bed at night.
Then sew it all the next day.

The cutting and prep is the most time consuming part. But I walk you through all of it very systematically. And then the sewing comes together fairly quickly.

  38. OHHH! Thanks for the pattern, my daughter will be very happy!!

    Palmi

  39. 55) Karen

I am pinning the center on the side. I have 7 1/2 inches of the center left over. Yikes, is something wrong.

  40. 56) pam gordon

Dana, I have sewn for years and am having a terrible time with this pattern. What do you mean by “pivot” the center piece when sewing to the side piece? Please help. I am in the midst of this and cannot go any farther.

    • 57) Dana

When you get to the corner, stop sewing, leave your needle down in the fabric, lift your presser foot, then pivot or turn your fabric 90 degress, then put your presser foot back down and start sewing in the new direction.
I guess that’s the best way I can explain how to sew the corners.
      Sorry if it confused you!

  41. Thank you so much for the baby doll basket pattern! I am making them for my 4 and 2 year olds for Christmas. The first is completed and is absolutely adorable with her new baby doll snug inside. Very cute!

  42. 59) Marianne

Might be hard to explain, but how stiff is the interfacing used. Trying to find suitable type in Norwegian craft stores

    • 60) Dana

      it’s stiff, but still bendable.

  43. 61) Sarah A.

Hey, Dana! Just made 2 for my 2 girls for Christmas! Thanks for a great pattern with easy to understand directions. I am a beginner sewer and learned new skills, but had fun and am happy with the outcome. Thanks!

  44. 62) Lucy

I’m having a terrible time trying to sew the binding round the edge of the finished basket! It seems really hard. Any advice? I’m hanging the end of the machine off the table and am finding I don’t have room to turn it round the corners. I’m not very good I know 🙁

  45. 63) Marianne

I made two of the medium-sized for Christmas and they turned out great. Mine were a bit floppier than yours so maybe my interfacing was not stiff/thick enough (had trouble finding the exact type in Norway). No biggie though as my daughter and niece loved them. The lining also ended up a tad too big so I had to re-do the seams with wider seam allowance so it would not be bulky. But I think this might be because I might have had a bit too wide seam allowance with the outer fabric. Anyways, a great pattern and I loved the final product. I used a soft, narrow corduroy for the outer and cotton poplin lining.

    • 64) Colleen

I had the same issue with my lining being substantially wider than the exterior when I put them together. I rechecked my seam allowances and they were exactly as listed in the instructions. Feeling frustrated that I have to sew the lining another 1/4″ seam allowance all the way around and then rip out the old seams to make it fit inside. Not sure what happened since I used quilting fabrics and exactly the lining & batting specified.

      • 65) Dana

        I’m sorry for your frustration.
The lining should fit inside perfectly, since it is cut out slightly smaller than the exterior pieces.

  46. 66) Jen

Do you get all sizes in one pattern or buy each separate. ?

    • 67) Dana

Yep! All three sizes are included are print to the same pages.

  47. 68) Ann Codlin

Delighted with the outcome of this pattern. Once all the cutting out was done it was a breeze to make. Your instructions were perfect and easy to follow.
I used the padding on the liner too and it gave it the extra firmness.
I know my granddaughter is going to love this!

  48. 69) Megan

Does anyone know which size would best fit a Baby Stella Doll?? A Cabbage Patch Kid?

  49. 70) Ruth

Hi. I bought this pattern the other day. It makes up beautifully and my daughter is over the moon with her doll basket.
Now my son wants one for his teddy and I’ve got some pre-quilted (pre-backed with batt) fabric that would look lovely for it, but I’m just wondering what the deal is with interfacing when/if using this fabric? Obviously I can still back the lining with interfacing but should I add in a sandwich layer of cotton/polycotton with interfacing or go without…?
Thanks, and thanks again for the pattern, it’s completely fab!

  50. 72) Nadine

    Hi Dana,

I live in Germany and wonder about the fusible stabilizer that you are using for the baskets (just bought the pattern and would like to make it for the 3rd birthday of my daughter which is next wednesday, so I need an answer FAST ;-)!)
Over here they have different numbers and I checked again at the store today and what they have is one: http://www.vlieseline.de/English/Products/Interfacings/Iron-on_Nonwoven_interfacings/H_250.htm

Or alternately something that will make it really stiff, something you would use for the brim of a hat.

So which one would you recommend using? Or are they both not ideal for this project?

THANK YOU so much for yur answer. I hope I cann still make this!
    Kind regards
    Nadine

  51. 73) Linda

So cute! I will be making two of these for my 19 month old twin granddaughters! I may add small pockets to the inside to hold a baby bottle and diapers! Do you think that would work?

  52. 75) Jamie Mitchell

I cant wait to make this. I also saw a swaddle photo. Do you have a pattern for that?

  53. 76) Cristi

By chance is there a cutting chart for the rectangles in the pattern? I make better cuts with measurements than around patterns. I know I can tape them together then measure, but just thought I would ask before taping them together.

  54. 77) Samantha Y

I love this pattern but really am struggling with the bias. Each time I sew it I find it’s too thin and keeps missing the fabric. I’ve done so much unpicking with it.

  55. 78) Debbie Miller

This is adorable! Would love to make this for my granddaughter. She loves her
    baby dolls!

  56. 79) Margaret Nugent

This is awesome! I am taking my 3 granddaughters to NYC at Easter to adopt a baby from FAO Schwarz and these carriers will be going with us!

  57. 81) Barb

Oh what a wonderful pattern. I can not afford the price. Maybe one day I will find a free pattern

  58. 82) Nancy

    Hi Dana,

I bought your baby doll basket pattern and my grandaughters love their baskets that I made them for Easter. My only question is when I sewed the outside pieces to the center outside, when I got to the foot part, one side was higher than the other. Could you tell me how I may have gone astray?
    Thank you,
    Nancy

  59. 83) Natasha

Where the pattern is it free

  60. 84) Lori Beth Clark

I am getting ready to start my second basket. The first was a gift for my three year old niece, she loves it! The pattern is wonderful and the directions are so simple to follow. The basket comes together so beautifully.
I did have a small problem when I was assembling last time that I am hoping to avoid this time. It seemed like the lining was not fitting into the outside very well. Once the outside has the batting basted to it, it feels like the same size as the lining. Am I missing something or doing something wrong?

    • 85) Amanda

This is exactly the problem I’m having, resulting in my lining hanging down a bit at the hood part.

Did you make a second? Did you make the lining smaller?

      Thanks

    • 87) Dana

Very cute! I love the fabrics you chose! Thank you for sharing with me 🙂 – Dana

  61. 88) Noémie

    Noémie

Just send me an email: danawillard (at) gmail.com

  62. 90) Sue

Love this pattern and planning to order. A question: would the doll bed work using pre-quilted material or would it be sturdier using the batting etc.? Thx

    • 91) Dana

I’ve never used that but you could definitely try it out!

  63. 92) Sheri

Wondering how long it takes to receive the download. Have been checking multiple times a day. Really want to get started. Granddaughters birthday is approaching fast. Thanks

  66. 96) Jenny

Thank you for the great pattern and excellent instructions. Very easy to follow. I’ve had such fun making the doll basket. Must make another!

  67. 97) NAncy

My granddaughter has a baby doll that is 22 inches long. Also about 12 inches wide. Is there a way to make the pattern bigger? Want to ask before I purchase it.

    • 98) Dana

You could draw the pattern out another 1/2 inch or so. But if it’s gets too large, it will be kind of floppy and not hold shape as well.

  68. 99) Katja

    Hi
your doll basket looks so cute. It is possible to buy it for me too because
    I live in Germany.
    Looking forward on your answer.
    Bye Katja

    • 105) Dana

      Hi Elizabeth,
      Sorry about that.
I’m surprised you didn’t email sooner to let us know that your pattern download never came through.
The email goes out immediately after purchase, perhaps it went to your spam folder?
But no worries, I’ve attached the pattern here for you.
      Enjoy,
      – Dana

  73. 106) Deb bergh

Love the pattern for my two little granddaughters

  74. 107) Joyce Dietrich

Hi. Love this pattern. Can I purchase with MasterCard instead of PayPal? Don’t like to use it. Joyce

    • 108) Dana

Thanks Joyce! Yes. There’s an option for credit cards at checkout.

  75. 109) Lisa

I’m such a cheapskate and debated on spending $8 for a pattern. I have to say I am glad I took the plunge. Its well worth the $8. This pattern is well written and you put a lot of work into it. I think now $8 is too cheap. Thank You my granddaughters are going to love these. I do have 1 questions. I used outdoor material and Im getting a little ripple. Not sure if I should have used the interface because its heavy or did I apply too much heat to the material? was thinking of making another with same material but wanted to get your opinion on before I proceeded.

    • 110) Dana

Oh my gosh that makes me so happy to hear!! Thank you thank you Lisa!

Hmm. On the fabric, I’m not sure what you mean by a ripple? Did you get a small pleat somewhere? Or a ripple in the interfacing you mean? Like a bubble? That can happen from time to time, no matter what kind of fabric you use. It could be that the interfacing separated a bit. Or when it was pressed in place, there was a small fold in the interfacing. I would try pressing (if you can….it’s going to be hard on a 3-D basket! 🙂 ) and smoothing it with your hands.
But outdoor fabric sounds cool! If it’s sturdy enough, yes, you can prob skip the interfacing. It all depends how “stiff” you want the basket to be.

      • 111) Lisa

Yes its a little bubble. I never worked with this heavier interface. So I was unsure. I did Iron it with a towel inside to give a little support and it looks so much better. Thank You. The outdoor material came out nice and I will post a pic as soon as I get the second one done. which I will use cotton material on that one. If I make another one with the outdoor material I think will skip the interface. Thank again for such an awesome pattern.

  76. 112) Joyce

I am loving this pattern and thinking it would be a great Easter basket for my granddaughter. Once all the fabric is cut, approximately how long does it take to sew together?

  77. 113) шаблон люльки для куклы.

Добрый день. Очень понравились ваши люльки для ребенка. Скажите, как можно приобрести выкройку, заранее вам спасибо.

  78. 115) Diane

I made the baby doll basket in pink camouflage for my 3 year old niece. She loved it and I was proud of the way it turned out.

  79. 116) Arlene Mongeon

Do you allow the sale of products from this pattern at local craft fairs?

    • 117) Dana

Sure! No mass production or large-scale manufacturing, but selling handmade items from the pattern is just fine. 🙂

    • 118) Kristin

Would pre-quilted fabric be suitable for this project?

  80. 119) Denise

I am cutting out the pieces od the doll bed. Are the lining cut 1/4″ smaller? Or it’s the sewing line. A bit confused.?

    • 120) Dana

Yes, the lining is slightly smaller, to fit inside the exterior.

  81. 121) Suzanne

I just made the large doll basket to go with a doll I had made for a little girl at our Church. She is a quiet, shy little one but when I gave her the doll basket her eyes lit up and she gave me the biggest smile. I’d say it was a big hit. The basket is fun to make up. My girls, who are in their late 30s are teasing me now as I want one for myself!!!! Now I’m looking for some other little girls in my life who might like one. They are addictive to make. Thank you Dana for this wonderful pattern.

    • 122) Dana

Oh this makes me so happy to hear! Thank you thank you Suzanne! 🙂
And I love your idea about making the Hold it Bin to go along with the Doll Basket to hold the clothes!! I might have to do that!
      Brilliant. 🙂
Thank you for the kind words and have fun sewing!

  82. 123) Suzette Becker

I just bought my 2 grand daugters each a American Girl Doll…….and of course granny also want one …lol and got it ..Now I have to save to get this pattern for us

  83. 124) Debbie

I just finished the doll basket for my niece for Christmas…using Tula chipper and the softest pink and white flanelette ever! Your pattern was fabulous! I had a sew along day with a gfriend that’s not as experienced, and she didn’t require much help from me at all! Now I ‘need’ the hold it bin pattern!
Thanks for a great pattern with fabulous instructions.

    • 125) Dana

Oh awesome! That makes me so happy to hear!
and yes, the Hold it Bin….with doll clothes inside?? That would be adorable 🙂

Thank you so much for this pattern, I love it!! I’m almost finished my first one for my little girl, I’ve gone for the large size, I’ve found sewing in the lining to be the toughest section, anyone else agree? I’m hoping with practice it will get easier! My first one is a little bit big/floppy at the hood section! One to keep
Perfecting. Any tips/hacks greatly appreciated!! Thank you xx

Hi there, is there a certain thickness of batting that is best to use. I have tried making something similar before but the hood kept flopping down and the basket kept flapping open. How does it stay upright? Maybe it’s just in the pattern design?
    Thanks

    • 131) Dana

Yea. You just have to play with the batting and find one that you like. My baskets are floppy too….especially the larger sizes. And that’s just the nature of the doll basket. The smallest basket keeps shape well because the hood is just a smaller area.

    Hello!
This pattern is absolutely gorgeous. It has been a long time since i have tried to sew, and when I did I was a beginner at best. However my almost two year old son is obsessed with “babies” right now, and I think a doll and a few accessories will be a perfect second birthday gift. Suffice it to say, I will purchase this pattern in a week or so after i practice a little on my machine. A few questions:
    1. Is the interfacing a heavy duty or light?
    2. Do you recommend a specific batting?
    3. Do you have other patterns such as a baby doll carrier, baby doll diapers, baby doll bibs? If you do, I would love to purchase those as well.

    Thank you!

      Hi Carol,
So cute that your two-year old is into babies and dolls! This is a really fun carrier to make.
      1. I used a heavier interfacing, specifically: Pellon brand, Fusible, “809 Decor Bond”
      2. Batting is: 1/2 inch “High Loft” Polyester Batting. You need 1 yard, or a crib size package.
      3. I don’t have other doll patterns at this time. Sorry!
      Have fun sewing 🙂

        Hello again,
I have made progress towards completing the basket! a question about one of the final steps: The step where you say ” pin and sew one of the lining side pieces to the lining center” do you mean to sew around the edge of the basket and should i just sew the two sides or do i also sew over to the hood as well…. so along the edge of the entire basket?

        • 135) Dana

          Hi Carol,
Those steps mean that you should sew the lining pieces the same way that you sewed the Outer pieces. The ONLY change is that you’re using a 1/4 inch seam allowance on the lining basket. So it’s like you’re making two doll baskets—the outer, and the lining, and then the lining goes inside the outer, and you sew them together at the edge (you can baste sew it first, or pin them together with the bias tape and sew them together.)

Hi! Quick question that’s totally off topic. Do you know how
to make your site mobile friendly? My site looks weird when viewing from my apple iphone.

I’m trying to find a template or plugin that might be able
to fix this issue. If you have any suggestions, please share.

    Appreciate it!

    Dana,
Thank you for sharing all your wonderful talents. My Mom used to sew but she passed away when I was younger…its so nice to view your tutorials and answer all my sewing questions. I love them all! I have a few projects on my list to make as I am now going to be a grandmother for the first time. Thank you so much and God Bless you and your family.
    Monica

P.S. Where did you get your tags made? I would love to get some with “Jaja” on them as “Jaja” is polish (informal version) for grandmother. Thanks!

What size bias tape is needed?

    • 144) Dana

I prefer to use 1/2 inch double-fold bias tape.

I find this site EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. I only wanted to purchase the baby basket pdf. WOW! Your site won’t let me even purchase. I guess I am used to ETSY and AMAZON.

During the confinement in Paris (France) because of the Covid, I sewed one doll basket for each of my granddaughters: a small one and a large one. The result is amazing. I am sure they will appreciate when we could see again!

Hi Dana, I love your Baby Doll Basket pattern. I bought and downloaded it today to make for my granddaughter who will soon have a sister. When baby arrives, I’m giving her a newborn baby doll and this basket. She’ll be thrilled. I live in a small town. The fabric shop is out of the Pellon fusible you mentioned, but did have a foam stabilizer. I’m thinking it’s sturdy enough that perhaps I can use it on just the outer fabric, and not the lining. Will that work, do you think? Looking forward to hearing from you! Thanks. Anne
